A Brief History of Gibellina
Gibellina has ancient origins dating back to prehistoric and Greek times, but its most significant development occurred in the medieval period, when it became an important agricultural center of the Belìce Valley. Over the centuries it was ruled by various feudal families and its economy relied mainly on agriculture and pastoralism.
The most dramatic moment in its history is linked to the 1968 Belìce earthquake, which completely destroyed the historic center, causing casualties and the abandonment of the old settlement. Old Gibellina was not rebuilt: on its ruins the celebrated Cretto di Burri was created, a monumental land art work that covers the ancient urban layout.
The new Gibellina was rebuilt a few kilometers further down the valley and conceived as a true museum-town, thanks to the involvement of internationally renowned artists and architects. Today Gibellina is a symbol of cultural rebirth, contemporary art and historical memory, unique in the Italian and European landscape.
