Short history of Pianto Romano (Calatafimi)
The Pianto Romano of Calatafimi is a symbolic place of the Italian Risorgimento, linked to the historic Battle of Calatafimi, fought on 15 May 1860 between the volunteers of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Bourbon troops of General Landone.
In this hilly area near Calatafimi, the first decisive clash of the Expedition of the Thousand took place. Despite being outnumbered, the Garibaldini managed to repel the Bourbon army, giving a strong moral and political boost to the campaign that would lead to the unification of Italy. Famous is the phrase attributed to Garibaldi: “Here we make Italy or we die.”
To commemorate the fallen and the symbolic value of the battle, in 1899 the Ossuary Monument of Pianto Romano was inaugurated, which today also houses the Museum of the Risorgimento, preserving documents, relics and historical testimonies.
The name “Pianto Romano” recalls the pain and sacrifice of the fighters, making the site a place of memory, identity and historical reflection for the entire nation.
