The oldest Easter procession in Sicily, between popular devotion and cultural identity
Mysteries of Trapani
The tradition of the Mysteries of Trapani has its roots in the late 16th century, within the context of Holy Week and the Catholic Reformation. During the period when Sicily was under Spanish rule, the city of Trapani adopted and reinterpreted the celebrations of the Passion of Christ, drawing inspiration from Easter processions widespread on the Iberian Peninsula.
The event originated as a penitential rite organized by local religious confraternities, in particular by the Confraternity of the Most Precious Blood of Christ, which during the first decades of the 17th century entrusted the creation of the first sculptural groups to Trapani artisans. The oldest document attesting to the presence of the procession dates back to April 20, 1612, when the ceremony assigning one of the sacred groups to local workers was recorded.
Over time, the rite became established: the sacred groups, known as the “Mysteries”, increased in number until reaching the current twenty, each representing a scene from the Passion and Death of Christ. Each group was traditionally entrusted to a trade guild or craftsmen’s association, thus strengthening the bond between faith, community, and local craftsmanship.
The procession takes place from Good Friday to Holy Saturday, traveling through the streets of Trapani’s historic center for more than 24 hours, starting and ending at the Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, which still preserves the sculptural groups when they are not in procession.
For more than 400 years, the Mysteries of Trapani have become not only a religious rite of deep devotion, but also an internationally renowned cultural event, capable of attracting worshippers and tourists from all over the world.
