Nods on Pantelleria

Pantelleria TDS Rent

Pantelleria is an island of volcanic origin located off the coast of southern Sicily. It is part of the province of Trapani and is connected to the main island and mainland Italy with frequent air and naval routes.
Pantelleria airport is located in the north-western area of the island. From there numerous visitors come to know its territory and explore the natural corners of the island.

Pantelleria extends for approximately 80 km2 and is home to just over 7000 inhabitants. Its geographical conformation and geological origin make this wonderful island a precious natural ecosystem. Its volcanic soils are rich in nutrients which make agriculture flourishing, especially with regards to the highly appreciated vine production. The most cultivated grape variety is the zibibbo which gives rise to the famous Passito di Pantelleria.

The Mediterranean scrub on the island is lush and fills the Pantelleria landscape from the coast to the more inland mountainous areas. The Pantelleria national park which crosses the island preserves a large part of these plant species and gives refuge to many animal species, including those of North African origin. The characteristic animal of Pantelleria is the Pantelleria donkey, native to the area and a species at risk of extinction.

Inside the park, in an ancient now extinct crater, a body of fresh water opens up to the view of visitors: it is the lake of Venus, located just 2 m above sea level and famous for its rich muddy bottom. of sodium, potassium and sulphur.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, Pantelleria preserves ancient evidence of the history of the Mediterranean. Already known in the Neolithic, it was part of the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs and the Swabians. The Arabs were responsible for the tradition of the typical Pantelleria houses, the dammusi, built in dark stone and with white-painted roofs with rounded shapes of clear Berber inspiration.
